When Should You Actually See a Podiatrist?

Not every foot ache needs a doctor. But some do — and waiting can make things worse. Here's how to tell the difference.

One of the things people don't always realize about podiatry is how broad the patient population is. We see toddlers with concerned parents, teenagers sidelined from sports, working adults who need to stay on their feet, seniors who want to maintain their independence, and competitive athletes pushing their limits. The foot doesn't care about your age — when something goes wrong, it affects everything.

Children: Growing Feet Need Watching

Pediatricians refer to us for a handful of very common concerns. Flatfoot in children is usually flexible and benign — but when it's painful or rigid, it warrants evaluation and possibly orthotic support. Sever's disease (calcaneal apophysitis) — heel pain in active, growing kids — is one of the most common pediatric foot complaints, and it responds well to activity modification, heel lifts, and stretching.

Ingrown toenails in kids can be distressing for the whole family. We take a gentle approach — local anesthesia, quick procedure, walking out the same day. And plantar warts in children are stubborn but manageable with age-appropriate methods.

Seniors: Mobility Equals Independence

For older adults, foot health is directly tied to mobility, balance, and independence. Geriatricians and assisted living facilities refer patients for routine nail care when self-care becomes unsafe — thick nails, poor vision, limited flexibility. It sounds simple, but regular podiatric visits prevent the infections and injuries that lead to hospital admissions.

Fall prevention is another area where podiatry contributes. Assessing foot structure, identifying balance-affecting deformities, screening for neuropathy, and evaluating footwear are all part of a comprehensive fall risk evaluation. Custom orthotics and proper shoes make a measurable difference.

Painful conditions like bunions, hammertoes, and arthritis that limit mobility deserve treatment. Minimally invasive options using local anesthesia make surgical correction feasible even for patients who can't tolerate general anesthesia.

Athletes: Performance Starts at the Foundation

Sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, and coaches send athletes our way for stress fractures, chronic plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, ankle instability, and biomechanical issues that conventional rehab can't resolve. Shockwave therapy has become a valuable tool for stubborn tendon and fascia conditions, and sport-specific custom orthotics address the mechanical root cause.

We're Here for Every Stage

At Fallbrook Podiatry, our doors are open to patients of all ages. Physicians can learn more about referring from pediatrics, geriatrics, sports medicine, or PM&R and physical therapy. For families and patients, same- or next-day appointments are available at our Fallbrook and Temecula offices.
