What to Expect at Your First Podiatrist Visit

Never been to a podiatrist? Here's exactly what happens during your first visit — from what to bring to what the exam involves and what comes next.

If you've never been to a podiatrist, you might be unsure what to expect — and that uncertainty keeps many people from seeking care they need. The truth is, a podiatry visit is straightforward, usually painless, and most patients walk out feeling relieved that they finally have answers.

Before Your Visit

Bring your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any relevant medical history (especially diabetes, circulatory conditions, or prior foot surgeries). Wear or bring the shoes you wear most often — we can learn a lot from wear patterns. If you can, fill out our patient intake form online beforehand to save time.

What Happens During the Exam

A comprehensive podiatric exam typically includes a detailed history where we ask about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, your activity level, and your goals. We then perform a physical examination checking your foot structure, joint mobility, muscle strength, skin condition, nail health, and circulation. A gait analysis — watching how you walk — reveals biomechanical patterns that may be contributing to your problem.

If needed, we may take X-rays in the office (our Fallbrook location has digital X-ray on-site) or order additional imaging like ultrasound or MRI for soft tissue concerns.

You'll Leave With Answers — Not Just Instructions

We believe patients deserve to understand what's happening with their feet. You'll leave your first visit with a clear diagnosis, an explanation of what's causing the problem, a treatment plan with realistic timelines, and answers to your questions. We speak both English and Spanish, and we take the time to make sure you fully understand your options.

Common First-Visit Concerns

Many patients worry their problem is "too minor" to see a podiatrist about. It's not. Others worry about being told they need surgery. For the vast majority of conditions, conservative treatment is the first — and often only — approach needed. We're honest about when surgery is necessary and when it isn't. Learn about our minimally invasive approach when surgery is needed.

Most patients are seen within 24–48 hours. Whether it's heel pain, a suspicious toenail, or a foot problem you've been ignoring for months — we've seen it all, and we're here to help. Hablamos español.

The Bottom Line

Your first podiatrist visit is about getting answers and a plan. No surprises, no pressure, no judgment. Just honest, expert care for your feet. Learn more about Dr. Patish and our practice.

Does a podiatrist visit hurt?

The examination itself is generally painless. We check foot structure, joint mobility, sensation, and gait. If X-rays are needed, they're quick and painless. Any in-office procedures would be discussed thoroughly before proceeding.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?
